"Fatherlessness," also known as "Untitled Play" and "Platonov," is Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's first play, written when he was 18 years old during his time at gymnasium. It consists of four acts. The play was discovered and published 19 years after the author's death. The title of the play was restored based on a letter from Alexander Chekhov dated October 14, 1878.
Due to its considerable length (around 170 pages) and abundance of characters, the play is often performed with intervals. In most productions, it is referred to as "Platonov."
Characters include Anna Petrovna Voynitseva, Sergei Pavlovich Voynitsev, Sofia Yegorovna, neighboring landowners, teachers, a retired colonel, a young doctor, wealthy Jews, a merchant, a rural teacher, and various servants.
The plot revolves around relationships and conflicts among these characters in a rural estate setting, featuring themes of love, betrayal, and tragedy leading to Platonov's demise. Adaptations of the play have been made into films and English-language versions such as "An Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano" and "Wild Honey."
