"Red Alert" explores the initial hours of a war initiated by the USA, nearly triggered by a lone general at the Strategic Air Command base in the Texas desert. With little time left to live, warned by a doctor and facing reassignment to paperwork at the Pentagon, he staunchly believes in striking Russia first without warning for a US victory. The narrative skillfully intertwines three parallel themes: unfolding events at the SAC base, the Pentagon, and inside one of the bombers headed towards Russia. Peter Bryant is a pseudonym; the real name of the author is Peter Brian George. Originally published in 1958 in the UK as "Two Hours to Doom." In 1964, Stanley Kubrick adapted the book into the film "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb," a black absurdist comedy.
