"Overcoming Barmaley!" is a fairy tale in verse by Korney Chukovsky, the last in a series of poetic and prose works about the kind Doctor Aybolit and the evil bandit Barmaley. The story also features the hero from Chukovsky's earliest tale - the brave Vanya Vasilichikov. Written in the first half of 1942, during the most dramatic period of the Great Patriotic War for the Soviet Union, the fairy tale bears the imprint of the author's personal tragedies. By the time of its creation, "Overcoming Barmaley!"—a narrative mainly focused on the military chronicle of the conflict between the "little country of Aybolitia" and the "beastly kingdom of Svirapia"—was resonant with the demands of readers, critics, and the country's leadership.
